8-year-old gabby carter. but tonight, we will, for the first time, hear from the little girl's parents. it is impossible for most of us to put ourselves in the place of gabby's mother, still trying to come to grips with the tragedy surrounding her daughter being caught in the crossfire two weeks ago in camden. tonight we go live to "action news" reporter jeanette reyes, who spoke today exclusively to marissa carter. tell us about that conversation. >> reporter: well, jim, it was a very difficult conversation, an emotional one. i talked to gabby's parents from everything about what gabby was like to the silence the community has shown when comes to justice for gabby. >> a bad dream and i'm going to wake up. my baby is going to come home and everything is going to be fine. >> reporter: the cruelty reality of burying a child is setting in for marissa carter and her husband. their 8-year-old daughter gabby was caught in crossfire and shot smt head while playing outside nearly two weeks ago.

>> after i heard the gunshots, i run to the window and i said, "gabby, ariel" and i can't hear anything. and i hear my neighbor across the street saying, carter, your baby. carter, your baby. >> reporter: eight months pregnant, carter was jolted out of bed and out the door. >> my baby was slumped in the doorway. and my baby was on the step. >> reporter: the bullet went through her brain and there was nothing doctors could do. he had was fro pronounced dead ten days later. what makes her tragic death more difficult is a community that has remained largely silent despite the award for the arrest and conviction of her killer swelling to more than $75,000. >> unfortunately that does not seem to have incentivized many people in the community. we have not received many phone calls. >> reporter: carter gave birth to a boy a week ago and named him king gabriel after his baby

sister. she struggles with the unimaginable grief of tragically losing a child. gabby and her younger sister slept together every night even though each had their own room. both are seen in this video celebrating their birthdays and what would be the last one for gabby. >> make a wish and blow your candles out. >> reporter: and when the story first broke, we talked about surveillance video from a nearby building that captures the moment gabby was shot. and i asked the chief if and when that will be released. he said portions of it will only be released if absolutely necessary. at this point, he said we have not gotten there yet. of course, it is not too late. if you have any information that may lead to an arrest in this case, you're encouraged to contact police. reporting live from camden, jeanette reyes, "channel 6 action news." jim? >> thank you. a judge has set the sexual assault trial of bill cosby for next june 5th . cosby was back at a norristown courtroom today for an evidence hearing. cosby is charged with drugging

and molesting anconstand at his home in 2004. his lawyers are asking for a change of venue saying the entertainer cannot get a fair trial in montgomery county. >> the time has come for somebody somewhere to shine a spotlight on the trampling of this man's civil rights and that time is now. >> i believe we can get a fair jury here, and we're going to go through that and deal with that as we are in each of the mowings this case. -- motions in this case. >> prosecutors also want 13 of cosby's accusers to testify at trial. the judge didn't rule whether those accusers could testify or if prosecutors could use cosby's deposition and a recorded conversation with constand's mother at the trial. philadelphia police have not yet named the off-duty officer involved had a shooting inside his northeast philadelphia home. the 19-year-old victim is the officer's son. police say the two got into an argument on the 2700 block of taunton street at 6:30 last

night. police commissioner richard ross says investigators have still trying to figure out if the shooting wasventional -- intentional. right now the officer has not been charged. the son is in critical but stable condition. the two men charged in connection with the shooting of an atlantic city police officer appeared in court this afternoon. colleagues of josh ladel, chisholm and demetrius cross appeared before the judge. a judge maintained bail at $750,000 each. investigators say at least one suspect fired shots when two officers interrupted a robbery in progress on saturday. a third suspect was shot and killed by police. in levittown, bucks county, thousands of people studying information technology has lost their school. everybody connected to itt tech wants to know what happened.

we turn to investigative reporter wendy saltzman live at the itt tech campus in bucks county. wendy? >> reporter: jim, the doors are locked and students areturned away. shattered dreams and tens of thousands of student loans. students woke up today to find the school closed. >> i heard an email about they was shutting it down. it just came out of the blue. so i thought everything was fine. >> reporter: the federal government which has been investigating the technical institute decided they would not pay approximately $580 million in federal aid to the school. itt was accused of being financially irresponsible and falsely advertising 100% placement rates. >> so they advertise that you're gonna get a job as soon as you graduate. you know, you end up not getting a job. you know, you're still stuck where you're at. >> reporter: she showed up a the levittown school to get a copy of their transcripts but it was

a ghost town inside. 8,000 employees nationwide will also lose their jobs. porter says she's walking away with $45,000 in student loans. >> when i first signed up, they said, oh, you'll have one loan. i ended up after graduating, i had three loans. >> reporter: the department of education today said current and recent students could be eligible to have their federal loans wiped away or they can transfer their credits to a school like bucks county community college. >> students can actually start as early as september, which is this month, a little bit later this month, and we also have october starting courses. >> reporter: itt had 35,000 students enrolled. they've been operating for 50 years in 138 communities in a statement, they said, we believe the government's action was inappropriate and unconstitutional. >> it's a shame. i feel for myself and other students like me, because we have to look for other schools now. >> reporter: students who were currently enrolled in itt tech or who attended here within the last 120 days could be eligible

for that federal loan forgiveness. now, taxpayers will be the ones picking up the majority of that bill that could reach as much as $500 million. live in levittown, i'm wendy saltzman, "channel 6 action news." thank you, wendy. politics now. the south jersey political candidate accused of sending a series of obscene messages to a reporter has dropped out of the race. mike krawitz sent this handwritten note today officially ending his bid for the west deptford township committee. the republican has denied sending the threatening messages saying that he had been hacked. one called for the rape of daily beast reporter olivia nuzzi. she says that he has been harassing her online for months. one of the highest profile of the so-called down ballot races in the country is the contest for the u.s. senate from pennsylvania. both candidates were campaigning in our area today and "action news" reporter vernon odom has the story.

the city of camden is getting a $16 million grant to improve roads and infrastructure. u.s. senators cory booker and bob menendez joined local lawmakers for the announcement today. one of the projects will improve the seventh street area which connects the be ben franklin bre to the downtown section of the city. this funding as many cog in a federal transportation grant. so for the youngest students,

the first day of school often brings both excitement and some jitters. "action news" reporter katherine scott was in plymouth meeting this morning. she spoke with elementary school students about their hopes for the year new. >> i'm happy. >> reporter: happy that the class is back in session at plymouth elementary. >> i can't wait to meet my new teacher and all my friends and learn. >> i get to meet my teacher and classmates. >> i'm super excited. >> reporter: as the buses rolled up and the students headed on inside, many were brimming with enthusiasm. there were a few new year jitters. first through third-graders started today. kindergartners beginning next week. in this first-grade class, students were assigned their first desks. teachers and staff were at the school all last week preparing for the students' arrival. >> it's exciting for the children here. it's exciting for the teachers. everybody's ready for another great year.

>> reporter: a year jam-packed with lessons but some fun along the way. some surprises too. >> i think i'm going to be learning hard math. >> reporter: any idea what third grade's going to bring? >> nope. >> reporter: for parents and students alike, there's plenty of preparation that goes into the first day. >> we have to get back on the bedtime schedule, which we didn't do too well last night. >> we worked over the summer at getting her -- trying to keep up as much as you can because children lose so much time over the summer. with the reading and the math. so we tried to do that. >> reporter: each new year brings new friends and opportunities and these kids tell me they're ready for them. >> we're going to be learning a lot of stuff in there. >> reporter: "channel 6 action news." as students return to class tomorrow in philadelphia, they had have thousands of new books to enjoy. at a news conference today in south philadelphia, school officials announced that 130,000 new books will be going to 53 schools. a multimillion dollars effort hopes to greatly improve

all day. and the green heads were fierce down the shore. and that capped temperature in the 70s in some areas. beach haven, atlantic city airport, only in the 70s. 71 in beach haven with that shower. cape may, 80 degrees. the farther west, though, the warmer temperatures, because you saw more sunshine. wilmington and lancaster currently 87. philadelphia, 86 down from our high of 88 degrees. so we've been in the 80s the past three days. saturday the 70s. but the heat will be returning. and it has been a hot summer. we've had '91 days of -- 41 days of temperatures in the 90s. normal for an entire year is 27 and this week looks like heat wave number seven is rolling in with the potential for four more days of temperatures in the 90s. so it's going to get hot. it's going to get humid. and satellite 6 along with action radar showing that we are still seeing hermine. the center of the storm, 125 miles south of eastern tip of long island. so it's less than 150 miles off our shore. and if you look at this, you can see how it is slowly moving to

the west. but this is a storm in a severely weak aned state. maximum sustained winds down to 50 miles per hour. it will continue to weaken and it will be pulling out tomorrow. so tonight's all about location. areas west of philadelphia, clear skies. philadelphia, partly cloudy. some showers to the east, thanks to hermine. overnight low, 65 in the suburbs. 71 degrees for center city. and tomorrow, that storm system will drift up to new england and that means we get in the influence of this high pressure heat pump. some 91 degrees tomorrow. it will be slightly humid. dew points in the mid-60s. so not oppressive. but thursday, you will feel it. it gets very hot. it gets very humid. 95 degrees. dew points in the 70s. so the heat index will make it feel close to 100 degrees. and future tracker really showing that at 4:30, philadelphia, the heat index, 100. millville, 100. lancaster, 100. dover could feel like 102. and then the heat will be hanging on right through friday

and right through saturday. and then things will begin to cool off a little bit on sunday. so the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast -- tomorrow it will be hoot. it will be moderately humid. not oppressive. mostly sunny skies with a high of 91 degrees. thursday, very hot, very humid, 95 degrees. that heat index around 100. friday, partly sunny, still hot. not quite as humid. 94. and then record heat on saturday, 96 degrees, ahead of a cold front. that will bring more clouds as we head through the day, possibility of a late day shower. saturday, clouds mixes with sun for the eagles game. possibility of a shower or thunderstorm. 88 degrees. monday is when you get that breath of fresh air. monday actually will feel a little bit like fall, 82 degrees. and tuesday, it's sunny, and it begins to warm up again with a high of 84 degrees. a lot of the times when the kids go back to school, you kind of want to pack away the summer
